Happy Juneteenth, Tucson. Our offices close early today in honor of the holiday.
Juneteenth celebrates the 19th century abolition of laws that allowed slavery in the USA. Yay for that!
Unfortunately there are still many millions of people worldwide who are completely or partially enslaved. Some of them are cleaners.
Safi was founded by three people who had met two women who worked in a large local hotel, cleaning. Sometimes they weren’t paid, and usually they weren’t paid for all of the hours they worked. They were told that if they quit their jobs, or even if they called in sick, they would be deported. They had no control over their schedules. While it wasn’t exactly slavery…let’s just say that there is a spectrum.
The worker-owned cooperative movement envisions a world beyond the slavery spectrum. Safi Home Works is proud to be a member of the US Federation of Worker-owned Cooperatives, and proud to offer cleaning that is not just green, but truly nontoxic– and not only because we use cleaning supplies that, if not edible are at least completely safe on the skin. We are also nontoxic in our relationships, attempting to develop and use honest communication, full disclosure and shared decisionmaking.
